only thing we have to fear is fear itself

What has the greatest potential to ruin a holiday?

  1. Being the victim of a pickpocket
  2. The fear of being the victim of a pickpocket

One vote for being the victim:
Try having a holiday at all without your wallet (money, cards, ID, travellers checks) or passport. Much time and hassle getting anything replaced, plus there’s the personal violation and feeling that you might have been able to prevent it.

Also, losing a good camera on holiday leaves you with three options:
    1) No more pictures
    2) More bad pictures on a cheap replacement
    3) More good pictures on an expensive replacement

Time and money expended and your insurance generally doesn’t cover luxury goods like cameras unless you specify it and hike your premium.

You can lower your chances of being pickpocketed so that you don’t have to worry too - keep your bag on the front of you with your hand on it as much as you can. Make sure everything is zipped up and anything important is fairly wedged in and deep down. Don’t carry anything you don’t need or don’t mind losing.

If you’re in an especially bad area, some people carry two wallets - one for any muggers with a few notes in, and a real wallet - or keep the rest of the money in a belt.
